With Apple’s September 9 event just days away, much of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max has already leaked—but questions remained over their final design.

Now, new reports suggest Apple is preparing a major surprise.

For months, rumors conflicted over the Pro models’ rear panel. All agreed that the camera module would expand into a full-width bar at the top of the phone. But the uncertainty centered on the rest of the back: would it continue with an all-glass design like the iPhone 16 Pro, or shift to a dual-tone look combining aluminum and glass with a dedicated MagSafe zone?

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the latter is true. The new design features a camera strip spanning the entire top third of the device and a distinct lower section covering the remaining two-thirds, optimized for wireless charging.

This description aligns with leaks pointing to a hybrid aluminum-and-glass finish, marking the biggest design change to the Pro line in years. If accurate, it could set the stage for an all-glass iPhone 20, as Apple explores new blends of glass and metal for its flagship models.

Switching to aluminum from titanium, while reducing the amount of glass used, is also expected to make the iPhone 17 Pro lineup noticeably lighter—a difference users will feel right away.

Apple’s reveal next week could confirm one of the most significant shifts in iPhone Pro design since the line was introduced.
