Huawei Develops AI-Optimized SSD Memory to Reduce Dependence on Western Technology

Chinese tech giant Huawei is actively developing specialized memory solutions tailored for artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to reduce reliance on Western technologies in its chips, according to reports from tech site Wccftech.

The memory under development is high-speed solid-state drives (SSD), known for their exceptional performance and long-term stability. This initiative is part of Huawei’s effort to break China’s dependence on Western AI storage solutions, which traditionally rely on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) from American companies.

Chinese media reports suggest that Huawei’s upcoming storage solutions will overcome challenges related to memory capacity, which currently affect HBM and Chinese manufacturer CXMT memory.

In addition, Huawei has introduced a dedicated AI memory management application designed to accelerate the training of AI models using multiple types of storage, including SSDs. This app allows multiple SSDs to function as a single storage unit, enhancing performance and efficiency.

Recently, Huawei has been expanding its product lineup to support AI platforms, unveiling its proprietary AI chips in the past months. These efforts come amid NVIDIA’s attempts to officially export its AI products to China, obtaining the necessary permits to provide certain AI chips and even launching a new generation of chips exclusively for the Chinese market.

China remains a critical market for AI technologies due to intense competition among tech companies to deliver innovative and cutting-edge solutions. Huawei’s AI-optimized SSD memory and management tools represent a significant step in strengthening its position in the fast-growing Chinese AI sector.
