Google has revealed groundbreaking improvements in the energy efficiency of its AI model, Gemini, dramatically lowering its environmental impact. According to a recent report covered by Ars Technica, each text prompt to Gemini now consumes just 0.24 watt-hours of energy—equivalent to only 9 seconds of TV viewing.

The report comes amid growing concerns over AI energy consumption, data center carbon footprint, and the environmental effects of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technologies. Google’s Chief Scientist, Jeff Dean, emphasized the company’s commitment to transparency: “We wanted to be completely comprehensive in everything we included.”

The breakdown shows that AI chips account for 58% of total energy use, RAM 25%, backup systems 10%, and cooling and other data center systems 8%. Notably, Gemini’s energy consumption has dropped 33 times compared to last year, significantly reducing Google’s overall carbon footprint.

While the report does not specify the total number of prompts processed by Gemini, it marks a key milestone in sustainable AI development, focusing on eco-friendly artificial intelligence and green computing.
