BYD Electric Hypercar Breaks Bugatti’s Speed Record
Chinese automaker BYD has just made history, dethroning Bugatti as the king of speed. In a live-streamed test at Germany’s Papenburg proving ground, the company’s luxury sub-brand Yangwang unveiled its new beast, the U9 Extreme, which clocked a jaw-dropping 496.22 km/h (308.33 mph).
That blistering run smashes the previous production car record set in 2019 by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, which hit 490.48 km/h (304.77 mph).
Engineering Marvel
The U9 Extreme packs four electric motors delivering nearly 3,000 horsepower, making it the first EV in the world built on a 1,200-volt platform. The result? Exceptional performance, unmatched acceleration, and efficient energy use thanks to its lightweight design.
Limited Edition Status
BYD says the U9 Extreme will be an ultra-exclusive release, with production capped at just 30 units worldwide. While no price tag has been revealed, expect it to command a premium given its performance, cutting-edge components, and status as one of the world’s most powerful electric hypercars.
With this achievement, BYD is signaling loud and clear: the future of hypercars may well be electric.
